First hand reports of Madonna hitting New York City's clubs here, here, and here.
Brings back memories of when Teddy Gray, John Cloud, and I braved the masses to see Madonna at her last appearance at the Roxy in 1998. Those were pre-cameraphone days (note the last photo above, those ain't lighters that everyone is holding up in the air), so all I have is a ticket stub and the way earnest letter to the editor I wrote below.
Dear Editor:
Practically every media outlet -- from The New York Times to Access Hollywood -- omitted a crucial detail in its coverage of Madonna’s surprise performance at The Roxy this past weekend (Mom’s Night Out, February 17, 1998): The Roxy is a gay-run dance club, and the crowd of over 2,000 on Saturday night was overwhelmingly and unmistakably gay.
The fact that one of the world’s most famous women chose a gay dance club for her first live performance in four years was an important part of this story, especially since it was widely reported that Madonna chose the venue because she “wanted to go back to her roots.”
Unfortunately, the media too often mentions a gay or lesbian angle only when a story is negative. (Witness Tom Brokaw labeling Andrew Cunanan the “homicidal homosexual” on the NBC Nightly News last year.) Had the topic been an arrest at The Roxy, you can bet the media would not have thought twice before identifying The Roxy as a “gay nightclub.”
Update: Note no mention of the gays in Liz Smith's column today on all of this....
